NewMac is an annual postgraduate Humanities conference hosted in alternate years by the University of Newcastle and Macquarie University. It is an inter-disciplinary project organised by Higher Degree Research Candidates. The conference offers up-and-coming postgraduate students the opportunity to present their research to a diverse audience (undergraduates, graduates, researchers, lecturers, etc.) and engage with fellow postgraduate students at the national level. The conference is open to all Australian postgraduate Humanities students. In addition papers presented at the conference may be published in Humanity, the peer-reviewed journal associated with the conference.
This year’s conference topic is “glocal,” a term that describes the intrinsic relationship between global and local paradigms. For many contemporary researchers the glocal (or glocalism), along similar lines to hybridism and transculturalism, represents a conceptual bulwark against the oft-cited homogenising forces of globalisation. Contributors are invited to consider the sometimes contentious, yet evidently reciprocal, and almost always problematic aspects of glocality: the global in the local and/or the local in the global. Possible topics for conference papers may include/involve, but are not limited to:
- Global and transnational history-
- Glocal in literature
- Global genres, local settings
- The glocal ethnographic novel
- Global versus local politics and ideology
- Local versus global politics and ideology
- Populism at home and abroad
- Glocal philosophy
- Glocal theology
- Local history(s), global origins, global history
- The West, globalisation and glocalisation
- The glocal and imperialism
- The glocal and transculturalism
- The glocal in colonialism (theory and literature)
- The glocal in postcolonialism (theory and literature)
- Glocal and the anthropocene (environmental theory and literature)
- Glocal feminism
- Creolisation and glocalisation in linguistics
- Writing the glocal, fiction/non-fiction/creative non-fiction –- creative writing
- Understanding the glocal through poetry – creative and critical
- The glocal author (for example, a biographical presentation on an author’s glocality)
Papers may be related directly to current research being undertaken, the broader contemporary research environment, or to other personal experience(s) related to the topic while undertaking research. Conference paper presentations should be approximately 20 minutes in duration. We also welcome 5-7 minute “Work in Progress” presentations, which will be accompanied by panel discussions.
Please submit abstracts of 200-300 words to our conference email address: newmac@newcastle.edu.au. The abstract should include your name, email address, university affiliation, title of your paper and indicate whether you intend to present a full-length conference paper or a “Work in Progress” paper. The new deadline for submissions is 31 May 2018.

The conference will be held at NewSpace (Corner of Hunter Street & Auckland Street, Newcastle NSW). Registration to attend and/or present is free.
